Here’s an an oil painting just finished of our friend Dong and a friendly macaque called Sweet. Dong and his family have a busy auto parts shop in Lopburi, Thailand. Their shop is situated just over the road from an 11th century temple. The temple is nicknamed “Monkey Temple” and is home to many hundreds of wild macaques that have lived there since it was built. Macaques have lived alongside humans in Thailand since prehistoric times.
The macaque population of Lopburi has increased dramatically in recent years and today there are estimated to be around 4500 wild macaques living in and around the temple area. One gang of macaques has even set up home in a disused cinema. These macaques are not chained or mistreated, rather they mingle freely with the townspeople. They form gangs between themselves and occasionally rival gangs can be seen battling on the streets.
Dong’s family love macaques and their shop is a haven for some of the young and very old macaques that come and go freely and choose, of their own free will, to be around their human friends for company and protection.
Dong’s family feed hundreds of macaques each day out of their own pocket. The macaques normally get extra food from foreign visitors that travel to Lopburi especially to have the fairly unique opportunity be up-close to wild macaques. However, due to the virus, Thailand’s borders have been closed to foreign tourists for half a year. Thailand is virus-free and the government aims to keep it that way.
Dong’s family protect some of the young and very old macaques from the lightning-quick attacks of sometimes aggressive dominant males. The macaque on Dong’s shoulder in this painting is called “Sweet” and, of her own accord, chooses to spend most of the day with Dong in the shop, observing all that goes on while he is serving customers. Sweet frequently jumps onto Dong’s shoulder during the day and they seem to enjoy a special animal/human friendship.

คุณโด่งและครอบครัวรักและคอยให้อาหารลิงเหล่านี้ พวกลิงเข้าออกอย่างอิสระโดยเฉพาะลิงอายุมากที่เข้ามาหาเพื่อขอการปกป้องจากเพื่อนมนุษย์
คุณโด่งและครอบครัวซื้อหาอาหารจากรายได้ของตนเอง ตามปกติลิงจะได้รับอาหารด้วยจากนักท่องเที่ยวที่เดินทางเข้ามาเยี่ยมชมจ.ลพบุรี เพื่อประสบการณ์ในการได้สัมผัสใกล้ชิดกับลิง อย่างไรก็ตามเนื่องจากสถานการณ์ไวรัสที่ระบาดอยู่ ทำให้จำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวหายไปจากการปิดประเทศ
ครอบครัวคุณโด่งให้ความปกป้องลิงอายุน้อยและลิงแก่บางตัวที่บางครั้งก็ถูกกลั่นแกล้งจากลิงหนุ่มที่มีความกร้าวร้าวกว่า
ลิงที่อยู่บนไหล่คุณโด่งในรูปภาพชื่อ สวีท เป็นลิงกำพร้าที่ครอบครัวคุณโด่งช่วยรับอุปการะดูแลไว้จนเป็นที่คุ้นเคยกับคนดี และมักจะนอนอยู่ในกระบะที่เตรียมไว้ให้ ตื่นมาก็จะเล่น กระโดดขึ้นขี่หลังคนนู้นบ้างคนนี้บ้าง มีความสุขในบ้านที่อบอุ่นแห่งนี้ บางครั้งก็จะกระโดดขึ้นหลังคุณโด่งอันเป็นภาพที่น่าประทับใจ แห่งมิตรภาพระหว่างคนกับสัตว์ที่แท้จริง
